We are very happy to announce that on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 our guest for the next Off the Rack: Conversations at Upstairs on 7th as interviewed by historian Amy Henderson will be the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Robin Givhan, fashion editor of the Washington Post and author of The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made Fashion History.
This is an event that will fill up very fast and with capacity for only 65 people I urge you to RSVP as soon as possible. Robin is going to talk about fashion and fashion in DC as well as sign copies of her book the Battle of Versailles. It is a page turner and a fascinating look into a simple fundraiser for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles that became a not to be missed event that even had Princess Grace of Monaco in attendance. This fashion show between five famous French designers: Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Emanuel Ungaro, Pierre Cardin and Christian Dior and five unsung American designers: Anne Klein(who brought her assistant Donna Karan) Bill Blass, Halston, Stephen Burrows and Oscar de la Renta was the big idea of Eleanor Lambert, a PR executive and Gerald Van der Kemp, the man responsible for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles. His son, Frank Van der Kemp and his lovely wife Maria, are customers here and will be in attendance to offer insights into that night. Google Gerald Van der Kemp and you will find out that he also saved the Mona Lisa from the Nazis. It is quite a story unless you think putting the Mona Lisa in your bedroom is not that big a deal. We will once again have dinner at six and start the program at 7.
IF you cannot come to the event but would like a signed copy let me know who you want it signed to and I will have Robin sign it and you can pick it up after the event. OR if you would like to read the book before the event you can pick one up and bring it for Robin to sign. I am expecting them next week and will let you know when they arrive. My friend, Dagmar Painter gave it to me as a gift and I gave it to Frank Van der Kemp to read so that is how I happened to read this interesting book. Keep it in mind as a holiday gift too. I really loved it.
