On Memorial Day I am remembering standing at Normandy and wondering how those soldiers made it from the beach to land as the landing is so high from the water. And how those that did survive did so without getting in the way of the massive cannons. And how scared they must have been. At the cemetery seeing all those headstones of all those young men you can’t help getting teary as you see the date they died is all the same. As we celebrate our freedom it is good to just stop for a minute to honor those men and women in harm’s way around the world and think of the million men and women and their families who have sacrificed so that we may have a day off and a barbecue with family and friends. But no mail delivery.
Ok I threw that last line in because I was making myself cry. It is amazing how truly brave so many of our citizens are to actually want to join our armed forces. Having a boy’s name didn’t help me when there was a draft for the Vietnam War and I had to go down to the draft board to prove I was a girl. I was happy to do it because there is no bigger chicken than me!
You know we always start our sale in July but Katy feels we should join every other store in the country and have a little mini sale. So if you are home today with nothing to do or you want to come in on Tuesday or Wednesday we are putting selected styles of Giada Forte, selected styles of Ace and Jig, Planet, Maria Calderara jewelry, Ampersand, selected items of Creatures of Comfort, some sweaters from Rundholz, Suno, Anarkh, the tech pieces from Spirithouse and Amanda Bond on sale at 20% off! This is only through Wednesday so come and check it out. There are some gorgeous pieces you will want.
For those of you who have not seen the Comfy yet don’t wait until we are out of sizes because you know I cannot get reorders. The little wire collar vest is here in white cotton weave fabric and it will look great over a black skirt of the same fabric. And speaking of WHITE, the fashion police will not fine you if you are wearing it for the rest of the summer. It is official.
Lots of you have asked me what I thought of Melania’s wardrobe on her husband’s first big trip. I thought it was really beautiful. I LOVED that black pantsuit she wore to Saudi Arabia with that gorgeous wide belt. And the lace dress she wore to a dinner with those amazing floral Dolce and Gabbana shoes. How gorgeous were those shoes? I mean, ok, they were $2200 so they should be but still.
The only two slips I thought were the mantilla she wore to meet the Pope as it was on her head sort of weirdly, and even though the floral coat from Dolce and Gabbana was absolutely a work of art, I think it is in poor taste to wear a jacket that costs more than the average American worker makes in one year. I know she probably didn’t pay retail and she is wealthy so she can afford it, but when the First Lady of the United States does something like that it sort of makes me feel as if she is not empathetic to the many people in this country who cannot feed their children and who are about to have their health care taken away if our Senate doesn’t rewrite the House bill.
We are half filled for our next guest at Off the Rack: Conversations at Upstairs on 7th NPR special correspondent Susan Stamberg. Feel free to bring your friends as we always like to meet new people. If you look closely there are some American AND Russian letters. A little commentary on American politics. She is very clever because until she told me I didn’t notice. We are the only store in the whole world that has these. Although I expect they will be best sellers at all of her outlets soon. They are really fun to wear and just the right length.
I will be here until 4 today and Katy and I hope to see you this week!
Enjoy your barbecue, this beautiful sunny day, and God bless our troops.
